The DLC was chartered in 1974 by the 7 shore line towns. Our mission is to provide leadership, guidance, and resources to preserve and restore Deal Lake and its tributaries as a healthy and stable ecosystem. In addition, control lake levels during heavy storms to the best of our ability with limited ocean tide controls.

    Deal Lake, its tributaries and watershed are regulated by Federal and State agencies. Check before you dig.

    Strict compliance with the NJDEP regulations apply to any land 50 feet adjacent to the Deal Lake shoreline as well as any land 50 feet adjacent to any stream that drains into Deal Lake.

    Property owners should contact the NJDEP before beginning any maintenance or any construction along the lake's shoreline.

    There can be consequences, including fines and time delays for proceeding with work, prior to securing the appropriate NJDEP permit(s).

    MINUTES – REGULAR MEETING

    February 17, 2022

     

    Due to COVID-19 the Regular Meeting of the Deal Lake Commission was held via teleconference using the Zoom Meeting Platform.  The Commission Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.  After the Salute to the Flag, the Commission Clerk announced that the notice requirements of the Open Public Meetings Act C.231, P.L. 1975, were met by transmitting the notice to the Commission’s official newspaper on February 2, 2022, posting where required and filing a copy of the notice with the Commission Clerk.  The Deal Lake Commission meeting will be audio and video taped and will be shown on APTV, Optimum 77 and throughout Monmouth County on FIOS 30.

    OLD BUSINESS

     

    1. 319(H) Grant – Dr. Szczepanski, Environmental Consultant on the 319(H) Grant, explained that his staff went out to Wesley Lake and returned the Floating Wetland Islands (FWI’s) to their original locations and they also added goose netting to the islands.

     

    Peter Avakian, DLC Engineer, reported that they just processed the final engineering certification for the MTD’s.  The rain garden specifications are being completed and once that is done they will need to go to Ocean Grove for their approval.  Once we have their approval we can go out to bid for the project.  There is more work that needs to be done with regard to the tree boxes.  There is a problem with some of the locations.  Once that is done we can go out to bid for that project also.

     

    1. 319 Grant Phase I with NJIT – No Update.

     

    1. Nobility Crest – No Update.

     

    1. Shoreline Protection/Education – Don Brockel, DLC Chairman, said it appears the State is acting on some of the properties but there really doesn’t seem to be any action taken against them yet. He would like to set up a meeting with the State to discuss the rules and regulations with homeowners disturbing the shoreline.

     

    1. Goose/Carp Remediation – Mr. Brockel reported that the USDA only does the parts of Deal Lake for Ocean, Interlaken and Loch Arbour. He would like to get a quote from them to do all of the lake next year.  He also mentioned that Asbury Park has changed who they use to control the geese.

     

    There was a brief discussion on the geese.

     

    1. Ship & Sniff Program with Clean Ocean Action – No Update.

    1. Restoration of 4 lakes/ponds west of Wickapecko and Seaview Mall – Mr. Brockel said Ocean Township is doing testing on a few ponds and there are no results yet.

     

    1. Water Testing: Monmouth University – Mr. Brockel reminded everyone that Dr. Jason Adolf will be holding a Workshop Meeting prior to the March 17th meeting at 6:15 PM. He will be speaking about the results and data collected from Deal Lake.

     

    1. 2022 Weed Treat Program – Mr. Brockel said the bid is ready and will be advertised next week.

     

    1. New 319 Grant Submission – Mr. Brockel said all of the professionals and commissioners are working hard to get everything ready by the submission deadline of February 28th.

     

    1. Jeannie Toher, Asbury Park Commissioner, read from an e-mail she received from Monmouth County DPW regarding the Oxonia Bridge. They will begin repairs in April.

     

    NEW BUSINESS

     

    1. Request to do an analysis of cyantoxins in Deal Lake – Mr. Brockel said he received a proposal from Larry Feinson, Hydrologist, to monitor harmful algae blooms in Deal Lake and to identify the factors that affect the HAB production. He hopes to have more information for the next meeting.

     

    1. Grow and Show Garden Club, Interlaken – Mr. Brockel said he gave a talk to the Grow and Show Garden Club at the Interlaken Town Hall. It was a wonderful session and they gave the DLC a donation of $100.00.

     

    1. Mr. Brockel announced that Deal Lake was named the 3rd favorite lake in New Jersey!

     

    COMMISSIONER’S LAST WORD

     

    Margot Fernicola, Loch Arbour Commissioner:

    • Still working on alerting the residents about what they do on their property and the effect it has on the lake.
    • Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep April 9th

     

    Carolyn Roarty, Interlaken Commissioner:

    • Reminded everyone of the Deal Lake Spring Clean-Up April 2nd.
    • Suggested purchasing plastic holders for the brochures that were recently published.

     

    Jeannie Toher, Asbury Park Commissioner:

    • Would also like to see plastic holders for the brochures.

    UPON MOTION of Interlaken, seconded by Asbury Park, moved that the meeting be opened to the public.

     

    Sylvia Sylvia Cioffi, Ocean, wanted to congratulate the DLC on being name the 3rd best lake in New Jersey.

     

    Ernest Magnoli, Florida, wanted to voice his concerns on numerous issues.

     

                There being no further comments and UPON MOTION of Ocean, seconded by Asbury Park, carried that the public hearing be closed.  There being no further business and UPON MOTION Asbury Park, seconded by Interlaken, carried that the meeting be finally adjourned at 7:51 PM.
